open positions

General comms-social media manager: Manage and support social media channels, monitor analytics to optimize engagement, assist with creating TSB advertisements, and contribute to visibility and outreach efforts.

⏱️Estimated time: 1 hour per week, could be 2 hours per week if more tasks are of interest (degree of involvement is very flexible)

Tiktok project leader: Lead and coordinate a TikTok content team, manage posting schedules, oversee production, and brainstorm creative content ideas to expand reach and engagement.

⏱️Estimated time: 1 hour per week + 1h bi-weekly for team meeting

YouTube video editor: Edit recordings of ‘Afternoons in The Science Basement’ talk series, review and finalize subtitles, and upload polished videos to TSB’s YouTube channel.

⏱️Estimated time: 4-5 hours per month, depends on extent of editing and subtitles revie

Podcast host: Looking for someone who is interested in becoming a podcast editor for The Science Basement podcast – no prior experience needed! The role would fit well for someone who likes to sit behind the screen and have more of a behind the scenes role but can add some creative flair.

⏱️Estimated time: 4-6 hours every other month + 1h meetings bi-weekly.

Podcast social media manager: Become the social media manager for TSB podcast. The only experience needed is being active on social media. At the minimum you would need to put up posts on instagram, LinkedIn, X and tiktok (optional) twice a month on upcoming episodes teasers, episode covers and make a reel once a month on the last released episode.

⏱️Estimated time: 1 hour each week + 1h bi-weekly meeting

Podcast editor: Looking for someone interested in becoming a podcast editor for The Science Basement podcast- no prior experience needed. This role suits someone who enjoys working behind the scenes, editing and refining audio, organizing files, adding intros/outros, and preparing episodes for release while collaborating with the team during feedback rounds.

⏱️Estimated time: 4–6 hours every other month + 1 hour bi-weekly meetings.

Vice project leaderWe’re looking for someone to support the behind-the-scenes work that keeps our blog running smoothly: organizing meetings, taking notes, coordinating tasks, and publishing posts. You’ll work closely with the current project leader and get hands-on guidance along the way, so no prior experience is required.

Writer: Become a one-time or regular contributor to our blog. Whether you want to tell the world about your own research, craft science-fiction stories, or write interview articles, we welcome you to write for us. You don’t need prior experience, just an idea for an article and an interest in writing.

Project leader for The Afternoons: Looking for someone who is interested in leading the team and taking over the Afternoons talks series, running every month  – no prior experience needed!

The goal of the Afternoons with the Science Basement is to give researchers a platform to give talks to a general audience. The team will recruit speakers, train the speakers, organise the venue and work with the Comms team to publicise the event.

You will gain experience in leadership, event planning, management and collaborating with people from other projects and institutes.

⏱️Estimated time needed: 2-4 hours every month, 1h bi-weekly meetings, monthly 1 hr project leader meeting, bi weekly, 1/2 hr comms meeting.

Speaker recruitment: Looking for someone to recruit speakers for the monthly afternoon talks. This involves emailing the potential speakers to book them in for the talk a month in advance and sharing all the information with the speaker 2 weeks before the event. 

⏱️Estimated time: 1h per week, 1h bi-weekly meetings. 

Audience engager: Your task is to help bring in and engage the audience for the afternoon talks. This would involve improving our advertisement both online and through flyers for both the entire afternoon talk series and the individual events.

⏱️Estimated time: 1-2h every 2 weeks, 1h bi-weekly meetings. 

Tech manager: We need a tech person who would be in charge of setting up the recording equipment on the day of the talks, and uploading the talks to the google drive for editing by the Youtube video editor.

⏱️Estimated time: 1h per month for the talk itself, 1h bi-weekly meetings. 

Project leader for TSB Socials: Looking for someone who is interested in organising The internal TSB social events. This is an opportunity to bring the entire TSB community together and foster a community spirit. 

As a host, you will get experience in event planning, group engagement and also have lots of fun with the rest of the TSB!

⏱️Estimated time needed: 2-4 hours every month + 1h meetings monthly.

Grant writer: As TSB is a non-profit organisation, we mostly get the funding to run our projects through grants. 

As a grant writer, you would be part of our grant writing team and help us:

  1. Find grants we can apply for, suitable for our organisation/ and projects.
  2. Draft grant applications with other project leaders. 
  3. Send out the grants and wait for results! 

Not only will this position offer you an experience in grant writing, but you will also be working with people from multiple projects and be raising money for our organisation to run! 

⏱️Estimated time needed: Depending on the grant application season – 2-4 hs per application, 1h meetings monthly.

Youth Club instructors: As a Youth Science Club instructor, you will be working with the other instructors to design a session for the youth club, purchase the items needed for the session, book the venue for the session with the project leaders and attend the teaching session where you can demonstrate science to the club using experiments.

You will gain experience in teaching, event planning, logistics and event organisation. You will also work closely with our partners from YEPP, Think Africa. 

⏱️Estimated time needed:  4 h per month for session planning and organising, 1h meetings monthly.

Card game developers: We had designed a card game for a session at the Youth Science Club used to teach kids about microbes and immunity.  We would like to improve the card game and sell it as merchandise during the 13th Helsinki Science Slam. 

We are looking for volunteers to:

  1. Illustrate the cards
  2. Play test the game
  3. Help with logistics for the printing and selling the game.

You will be working with the original developers of the game, so you won’t be alone! 

⏱️Estimated time needed:  Depends on planning meetings, and time required for illustration. But you will not do this alone.
