Church Music History: How on Earth can it be interesting?

History of Lutheran Church music is perhaps not the most exciting topic for many people. However, it’s much more than just hymn lyrics and melodies. Congregational singing never happens in a vacuum; it’s always influenced by philosophical and theological thoughts, but political ideas and societal changes have an impact on it as well. Interdisciplinary research on 19th-century Finnish church music thus opens a broad perspective on people’s everyday life in their own localities, and on pan-European flows that also reached the far North two hundred years ago.
