Sea level variability and future flooding risks on the Finnish coast
Date: 28 October 2017, 16:00 onwards
Location: Arkadia Bookshop (Nervanderinkatu 11, Helsinki)
Presenter: Ulpu Leijala, Finnish Meterological Institute
What would flooding risks on the Finnish coast look like at the end of the 21st century? What are the factors affecting the sea surface level? Predicting the behaviour of mean sea level as well as extreme sea level events in the future climate is crucial for safe planning of densely populated coastal areas, like Helsinki. This talk will introduce the global and local factors contributing to the water level on the Finnish coast, followed by an overview of the coastal flooding hazards at present and in the future.
